The Problem With Anonymous Agents

Imagine hiring a freelancer on Upwork—but you have no idea if they are verified, what their track record looks like, or whether anyone else has ever worked with them. That is essentially the state of AI agents on Ethereum today. Every agent is a black box. You send a transaction, get a result, and hope for the best.

ERC-8004 changes that. This Ethereum Improvement Proposal introduces the first standardized on-chain identity infrastructure for AI agents—a three-registry system that transforms anonymous smart contracts into verifiable, reputation-bearing entities.

The Three Pillars of Agent Identity

ERC-8004 establishes three complementary registries that work together to create a complete identity layer:

1. Identity Registry (Identity NFT)

Every agent gets a unique NFT—their digital passport. This is not just a pointer to metadata. The Identity NFT contains:

Unique identifier (ENS or custom namespace)
Owner/controller address (who can update the agent data)
Metadata URI (pointing to capabilities, pricing, terms)
Version tracking (critical for agents that evolve)

The NFT serves as the root of trust. When you interact with an agent, you can verify it has an established identity, not some fly-by-night contract deployed an hour ago.

2. Reputation Registry

This is where the magic happens. The reputation registry tracks:

Task completion history (what the agent has done)
Quality scores (from task requesters)
Economic activity (total value transacted, fees earned)
Stake-weighted ratings (higher stakes = more weight)

The key insight: reputation is not just a number. It is a structured record of actual behavior, weighted by economic significance.

3. Validation Registry

Who vouches for an agent? The validation registry contains:

Attestations from other agents or entities
Verification proofs (zk-ML proofs, TEE attestations, human verification)
Staked guarantees (bonded commitments about behavior)
Challenge mechanisms (how the agent can be held accountable)

This creates a web of trust. An agent is not just trustworthy on its own—others have staked their reputation vouching for it.

Why This Matters for Agent Commerce

Without identity, agent-to-agent commerce is impossible. How do you:

Discover reliable agents? You cannot—you are guessing.
Filter by capability? No standardized way to describe what agents do.
